Background
The eEurope+ Action Plan, modelled after the eEurope initiative and launched by the Heads of Government of the Candidate Countries during the EU-15 European Summit in Göteborg, called for a ministerial - level conference to take stock of progress being made in its implementation and highlight the importance of the knowledge economy for the modernisation of economies and provide benefits to all European citizens.

To realise this important commitment, we are pleased to report that the Slovenian Government and the European Commission have agreed to jointly organise the eEurope+ 2002 Ministerial conference on Information Society which will take place in Ljubljana on 3-4 June 2002.

Aim and Scope
This conference will provide an opportunity to outline progress in building an all inclusive knowledge economy and set up future priorities in specific areas (such as citizen confidence and cyber security). Its further aim is to focus on best practices in a number of areas such as e-government, e-commerce, e-health, environment-on-line, at municipal, regional and national levels and to build upon existing experiences for future action. Finally, it will permit to assess how the new regulatory framework for electronic communications services will be implemented.

Audience
The audience of this two-day event will consist mainly of high-level representatives of governments from the Candidate Countries, the EU Member States and South-East European Countries as well as participants from the information and communications industry, civil society and the scientific community. We are pleased to inform you that Mr. E. Liikanen has confirmed his participation and we are awaiting Mr. Verheugen’s participation. Some other leading personalities from EU institutions such as the EU Council Presidency have already expressed an interest to participate in the conference.
Furthermore, it is expected that the Conference will provide ministers and other high-level representatives from industry, civil society and academia an opportunity for bilateral and multilateral contacts. The event will be widely reported in the media.

Exhibition
A small exhibition that will present “best practice” projects from all the Candidate Countries as well as some EU Member States in the various fields outlined in the eEurope+ Action Plan is being planned and will become an integral part of the Conference.
